The Keek da Sneek of Nobel Prize winners (he didnt sound like that 15 years ago...) is back for another one.

Typically I like to let these sort of things speak for themselves but this one deserves a bit of commentary. First off, the vid is only 4 or so minutes long and he only flashes a bit of Antrax-infected mouse data at us with a %100 survival rate and in science both of those things are big alarms.
The idea here is that they've conjugated a molecule (alpha aptamer), to which an infected person will mount an immune response, to a linker, which in turn is conjugated to a molecule which has binding specificity to some marker (a DNA/RNA sequence, a protein perhaps?) native to a drug-resistant bacterium. This complex binds to said marker and flags the bacterium for disposal via our natural immune responses.

I can think of about 30 problems with this, but none more pertinent than the lack of specificity of the molecular homing beacon at the end of this thing. With the myriad of cell types in the human body, each likely to have different affinities for the uptake of this complex, with different complements of proteins which could possibly modify this complex in who-knows what sort of way, it would seem that there could be tons ectopic side-effects with this sort of drug.

Then again when a'rent there side effects. Lets hold off on that second Nobel for now tho' Kary. See you on the 280 tho' big homie.

The curious case of Caster Semenya

In case you're not on BBC every hour on the hour, then you probably haven't heard of Caster Semenya. Heres the gist:

She's an 18-year-old South African and after destroying the competition in all of the qualifying rounds at worlds in the 800m, the IAAF has asked her-well, decided that she should--take a gender test. Now, this isn't all to uncommon in women's track and field, and if I remember correctly, there was a big fiasco with some Russian women in the Olympics back when I was in diapers, but this case is a bit unique.

Semenya is black, has a bit of bass in her voice and is apparently abnormally muscular, even for a female runner--she also doesn't have a penis. Where this gets interesting is when questions are raised as to what actually constitutes someone being a man or woman, aside from sex organs (note also that the likelihood of an 18 year old south African sprinter having a sex change operation is nil).

One might argue that a man is one whose karyotyope has an X and a Y chromosome, and that a female is one who has two X's. Of course that only works if you've never heard of nondisjunction or aneuploidy.

Undoubtedly, Semenya has some abnormal karyotype, and is probably a woman who just happens to have a Y chromosome in addition to her two or more X's. Having this Y chromosome doesen't make her a man and doesent give her any selective advantage over the other women who she races. The only way that she could be a man, in fact, is if she's is found to have a Y chromosome, AND have two testicles, no ovaries, and no ovatestes.

*edit: ovatestes are a hybrid between ovaries and tesitcles which are characteristic of so-called "true hermaphordites."*

*double edit: It is also impossible for humans to be "true hermaphrodites," as real hermaphordites produce both sperm and eggs. Humans just cant do this. Certainly there are people who are born with both sex organs, however, one of the two end up dysfunctional by the time puberty comes around.*

Just in case you're interested, theres this doctor from South Africa by the name of R.M. Wiersma who studies hermaphorditism in South African children (human rights/bioethical problems anyone???) In any case, he/she did this crazy 23-year study on 111 south African "true hermaphordite" children whose ages ranged from 1 day to 13 years old--only 14 of whom were above the age of 2 years old--in which he/she biopsied the gonads of these children to asses the histologic patterns--that is presence of ovarian, testicular or ovatesticular tissue.

There is no room for partisan politics in university-level government (*coughs* national government neither) plain and simple. With that considered, then, tossing out all of the filler that each of the candidates claims makes them better than the people they're running against, what makes one candidate better than the next is how competently they can represent the student body as a whole. I realize I'm opening up a knarly can of worms, but in my opinion it really isn't as complicated as everyone makes it out to be.

To save time, I'll say this:

I voted for Kalwis, even though I feel that he only looks out for his own interests, that he's much more diplomatic--and far less of an idiot--than the two guys he's running against. I really don't think that he gets it, and I would have loved for him--and all of the other officers from this past year--to not have run for reelection, but shit, with he competition being so wacc, why the fuck not.

I voted for Tiffany mostly because I don't like abstaining. Again, I don't think that anyone should be running for reelection but...

I voted for Matt and Victor, and I would have voted fro them regardless, because I think that they do their jobs well. Victor never hesitates to indoctrinate me, but he dances well, and you always vote for a guy who can dance.

I abstained when voting for organizing director because both candidates suck.

And I voted for Leda because Omar is horribly inexperienced--not that Leda is an SUA vet--but she can dance, so that was good enough for me.

note: these are the reasons why I voted for the people who I did, and I'd like to think that I'm much more informed than most students-well I know I am. Personally I would've liked to vote for victor and Matt only, but the field was just so weak otherwise.

I'm still in favor of SUA voting to replace itself with a Senate style government ala every other school, but what can you do...

I realize(based of the observations of one of my more astute readers)that most of my blogs that don't involve videos, shoes or basketball are typically about me, and they're typically indicative of my apparent "woe is me" attitude. Well, 'woe' is not me, however, I like to think of OFFDAHOOF as my own personal arena for venting my everyday problems and triumphs--be they however minuscule and hyperbolic as they be--and that I'm actually something of a chipper guy because of it.

Still, I dedicate this blog to you, although it has nothing to do with you, just because your cool.

I hear you. No more of these "shit is mad real out here" posts that only contain text, unless I think that voices something that I've come up with thats minutely insightful.

And with that said, let this be the last:

These past 3 days have quietly been the most mentally taxing of my life, for reasons aside from school, no less. I recall a similar feeling in the first grade when I was learning to eat lunch without dropping food everywhere, except now its a touch more intense. No details, no pseudo-clever, mildly masochistic and dry punchlines. It just is what it is. These past few days have sucked, and technically they aren't over for another couple hours.

I'm dedicating the rest of my days to not being this stressed out.

I understand your points about him, however, I don't think that his so-called wackness is really a reflection on him as an artist, but is more you equating parody with illegitimacy.
I think that his story is his; that his style is his, and that there are reasons for that. And instead of chiding him on account of his similarity with other folks tossed under the newly minted 'hipster rap' umbrella, that we should instead take him for who he is. Granted, his music isn't phenomenal; I find his eclecticism enjoyable, and I wish that more people were okay with broadcasting their abberant quirkiness--other than Yeezy and Weezy of course.

Also, you are right, his ego is too big.

i've been thinking of staying in college for a fifth year, but i can't really decide what I'd want to do with that extra year, especially considering that were I an ambitous person, then I'd be done with my major next winter... yea...

Anyhootzzzz, heres the options/subjects of a bunch of crinkled papers dwelling at the nether regions of the bottom of my back pack.

option 1:
Stay here for an extra two years and get a masters in Molecular Bio.
pro: I'd end up knowing hella Bio, and probably get sum pubs
con: I'd be here another two years, and I'd have to take the GRE in the fall...

option 2:
Stay one extra quarter and drag out my major as long as possible; write/finish my senior thesis comfortably, maybe get a pub, try and get into AMGEN the summer following, and spend jan-august studying for GRE/MCAT/etc...
pro: this seems to be the most logical option
con: I'm not so sure I can make myself study and work full time for 8 months...

option 3:
Stay an extra two quarters, and get a minor in chemistry and take hella spanish classes, and possibly spend that final quarter abroad...studying a broad...
pro: I really like chemistry!
con: its still just a minor in chemistry, and it doesent make fiscal sense to spend 2-3 quarters just to learn more chemistry and spanish.

option 4:
Stay a full fifth year and get a minor in Bioinformatics, and take mad spanish classes.
pro: Bioinformatics just sounds flossy. And all i'd really have to learn is how to program....
con: All i'd really have to learn is how to program...

and lastly,
option 5:
stay a full fifth year and get another degree in Enivronmental Chemistry (not studies or science, chemistry.)
pro:
truth: Alot of Econ Majors wish they were smart enough or had the work ethic to be Biochem/premed/molecular bio/etc... majors.
truth: Alot of Bio majors wish they had the brains to be physics/chemistry/computer science/engineering majors, and be able to do it as effortlessley as the do--Because, lets face it, its always a bio major whose having trouble remembering (**coughs** relearning) the calculus/trigonometry in those physics classes that all Science majors have to take.

I happen to be a Bio major who has serious Chemsitry major envy, and this way, i'd be a chemistry major too, and do it all before i turn 22! (take that Econ majors)

con: I'd have to stay a full fifth year, and some upper division chem classes that i'd have to take (e.g. inorganic chemistry and advanced laboratory in inorganic chemistry) are graded on percent yields and that sucks major ass.

I'll probably wake up sometime this week with a decison in my head and go with that. I'm sure my advisor will either love my eclecticism or shit on me for coming up with 5 different ways to assassinate my gpa when I could be done with my major, and begin being a grown up.

...and I think you call it a pentadent, but wtf do i know.

Last night I dreamed that I was talking with my great aunt about red blood cells in a park that I'm pretty sure is in Madison, Wisconsin. She told me that hemoglobin in the sickled red blood cells of people heterozygous for sickle-cell anemia undergo ubiquitination after being in circulation for a smaller amount of time than red blood cells so that they're degraded quicker. For whatever reason, I didn't find this conversation unusual at all, and I asked her if being tagged with ubiquitin was a way of offsetting a larger production of sickled cells in heterozygotes for the disease than normal cells, and she said no, because the gene encoding for the mutant alleles were recessive, and that there were more normal cells than sickled.

When I woke up I considered three things: 1. that my genetics book is seeping into my subconsciousness, 2. that my aunt was a pharmacist and probably the only relative that I have who'd have known enough about genetics and biochemistry to answer the question that I asked, and 3. that I only vaguely recall an interaction with my great aunt once when I was in the fourth grade, and I can only vaguely recall her telling me that she was a pharmacist, and that my brain is sketchy as hell for piecing this all together; and while I'm at it, 4. that I definitely made a joke earlier that day about ubiquitin, and that its sketchy as fuck that I had such a detailed dream about it....

so... After my first final, I actually feel a bit invigorated to study even more for my other finals--putting aside the fact that my next final is in less than five hours, of course....

Still, I feel quite accomplished having completed my first physics course since the 9th grade, and all things considered, I think that I've earned this ten minutes of musing/reflection.

Now that I think of it, this physics class was quietly the most competitive class that I've ever taken. The material wasn't easy, but the median test and homework scores were always in the mid 80's. Some people probably credit this to us having a good professor, but to real, she wasn't that dope, and lokee her explanations of conceptual material was wacc. What that means, then, is that the field of competition is narrowing, while getting more intense simultaneously (i'm sure my econ or evolutionary bio friends cold make me a nice graph of this)--and thats kinda mortifying (especially when you consider that I'm skipping the 2nd class next quarter and taking the third class in the series).

...then again, I recall going on some crazy tirade a couple weeks ago about how I dislike curves, and that I can only sleep at night if I do well even if there were no curve (Megan knows wut I mean)so maybe competition is a good thing...

Heres to not having another 4th grade/12th grade AP CALC academic implosion because everyone in my class(es) were alot smarter than I was!

So, after talking to the med school advisor here, I've pretty much decided how the next few years of my life will play out (and depending on how those years go, I suppose the rest of my life follows in fairly quick succession). I've spoken with her a couple times (although a bit less seriously, I must say), but this time was different. It was sort of an out of body experience for me, more akin to Morpheus taking Neo to see the oracle in the first matrix movie--the part where she tells him exactly what he needs to here, rather than telling him what he needs to actually do, per se. And once I got over the bout of nausea and dizziness that most people get after talking to her, I have to say I'm pretty excited about it. Sure there are some classes that I wanted to take that I'll probably never be able to (goodbye Bioinstrumentation), and there are some (some say) bitter Nobel Prize Finalists and National Academy of Science guys whose classes I wanted to duck that are now seemingly unavoidable (pronounced biochem 100 series) but in the long run, I suppose that it'll just make me all the cleaner--or angrier... or both.

In any case, I've come to realize that I have a lifetime to be frustrated, and that my early twenties are the last few years that I'll really have to do what I want to do without (too much of a) penalty. And, I haven't decided this outright, but I'm thinking that the cheapest (and coolest) way for me to expand my coursework and spend more time feeling game on stuff (read myself) is to cop a masters for a couple years before doing the MCAT dance. It doesent take too much studying to get into those programs, right....

It hurts me to admit it, but I am deeply dissapointed with your performance thus far. And, I know that my opinion doesent matter for anything, and that on face value, this may appear to be some unknown kid with a blogger account bashing you--and when it boils down to it, it is--, but fuck that, it isn't. I'm a fan; I watched you when you were in High School, and when you were at Ohio State, and I loved every minute of it. I even went so far as to go on borderline Marxist tirade about how a scenario where Portland chose Durant over you in the draft a couple years back would be the hugest travesty in Basketball since, well... Sam Bowie going before Jordan. I mean, you blocked shots, you rebounded, YOU CARRIED OHIO STATE IN THAT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME--granted your offense has always needed a bit of work; at times you did some stuff that was reminiscent of a young Shaq--and i loved it.

But look at you now: injured for the 3rd time this season, and grabbing less boards than your back up, Joel Pryzbilla. It hurts my heart to see you getting 9 and 7 and not 15 and 13... it really, sincerely does.

Not to mention that over in OKC the guy selected behind you just dropped 32, 10 and 6 with 3 steals on the Lakers (in a losing effort, tho'...)

so... getting past how problematic (and troubling) this cartoon is, the question that arises, then, is whether Sean Delonas, the author of this cartoon, deserves to lose his job. The NAACP seems to think so, but I kinda.... sorta... don't really.... agree...

I understand the racial undertones of this cartoon perfectly well--as did the author when he was drawing this, I'm sure--however, I can't in good conscience join the NAACP bandwagon when there is no clear cut indication that the monkey in this cartoon is made to represent president Barack Obama, and not congress. Some would argue that thats just it; that this cartoon is deliberately ambiguous, and that Delonas is racist. I'd say that he's careless, (from the 20 or so cartoons of his I just read, probably) republican, and a bit on the thick witted side. Surprisingly, so is everyone else at the New York Post...

I'm not defending the guy, (in fact, I can tell from his previous work and website that he's something of a piece of shit), but hey, pieces of shit need work too. And besides, what the NAACP doesen't do to him, the court of public opinion will.
